Need help with Adam and Eve

I’m confused as to how Adam and Eve’s children had children. I’ve heard that the world was populated by these 2, but I’m unclear as to how. I’ve read some answers on the magical Internet, but all point to elaborate speculation. I’ve read that Adam and Eve actually represent man and woman, in general. I’ve also read that Adam and Eve lived hundreds of years. I’ve also read that there was incestuous relations between the children, but it’s ok and acceptable. I’ve also read that they had dozens of kids, but the “holy” books only name a couple.

Anybody know?

  1. I know!

    They never existed!

  2. There is certainly a metaphoric quality to the story of Adam and Eve. Adam being representative of man, the garden of the eternal life offered before the fall, etc, etc.

But the fact that the account in Genesis of Adam and Eve’s life includes a listing of their lineage leading up to the times of Noah would seem to indicate they were actual people, with actual decedents.

The question of “where did their children’s children come from?” has been a difficult one for me to wrestle with over time as well. Since babies are made only one way that I know of, I’m led to conclude that there was a sort of incestuous breeding process that was necessary to perpetuate the race in the beginning.

Adam and Eve certainly had many children. They lived for hundreds of years. Certainly they had more children than just Cain and Abel. When Cain is cast into the wilderness he takes a wife and settles in a different land. It must have technically been his sister.

And although God’s word clearly forbids such relationships once the law is introduced in Deuteronomy, that was thousands of years after the Creation account. It’s entirely possible, and plausible, that in order to begin the human race, he did not consider their actions sinful. Or if he did, in his grace he withheld His judgment.

  3. But the fact that the account in Genesis of Adam and Eve’s life includes a listing of their lineage leading up to the times of Noah would seem to indicate they were actual people, with actual decedents.

I would argue that listing decedents and providing lineage doesn’t prove that they were actual people. Hindu and Greek mythologies are filled with families and lineages. Even more recent works like Lord of the Rings and Dune can provide lineages to fictional characters.

My point is this: many cultures throughout the world have found it necessary to provide for an “Adam and Eve” scenario. It only makes sense, in a simplistic sort of way. I don’t know a whole lot about the Christian religion, but I’m trying to find out. In Islam, there is also Adam and Eve; but nowhere does it discuss the fact that their children had incestuous relations in order to “populate” the Earth.

My second point is this: According to Judeo-Christian thinking, the Earth is merely a few thousand years old. Certainly not enough time to have an Adam and Eve evolve into the various races found everywhere with such different appearances. Even if you don’t believe in evolution (that’s another problem), one would have to define how the various races came about from Adam and Eve.
